They have actually removed um many Podcasts that they deemed were Was spreading misinformation so that's Kind of as an aside we mentioned that Spotify shares uh jumped up 12 yesterday After the streaming service lost uh more Than two billion dollars in market value Last week what does that signal to you Hi anne marie look investors are Confident in the company uh spotify Founder daniel addressed the joe rogan Controversy by following the successful Playbook established by social media Companies like facebook he said that the Company would remove some episodes like You said and that they would affix Warning labels to other episodes Um so in the meantime artists neil young Joni mitchell they pulled their music From spotify How costly could that be for the company Because i know there's you know Obviously some revenue from music Spotify started as a music streaming Service but then they pivoted to Podcasts presumably because it was going To make them money Yeah look um If big artists like taylor swift were to Pull spotify could in theory suffer a Brand or reputational hit but as you Said ann marie spotify long ago Successfully pivoted to podcasts which Are uh by almost all metrics more
Profitable by some estimates joe rogan Does about 11 million streams per Episode which makes the 100 million that Spotify paid to be the exclusive license Holder uh looked kind of small relative To the license fees that they had to pay The record labels um So because of the company's scale and The lack of direct competition it would Be pretty hard for artists to pull out In mass So you know spotify is not the first Sort of tech company to have to wrestle With misinformation on their platform Service but spotify is not like twitter Or facebook and you just pointed out Something that they pay joe rogan for The information that he provides for the Show that he provides the plot the Podcast so how is spotify in a different Different Position i guess than twitter or Facebook Spotify is effectively joe rogan's Publisher this is very different than The conspiracy theories that spread Uh wildly and probably unwanted across Social networks like facebook spotify Paid a lot of money for joe rogan they Own joe rogan and they own this Controversy That is a key difference and we'll see How they manage that moving forward but You know we point out spotify said they
