A new report found sexual harassment Against women in the workplace remains As widespread as it was 5 years ago the 2024 women in the workplace report found About 40% of working women reported Experiencing sexual harassment this Ranged from sexist jokes to having Obscene comments directed toward them The report was conducted by consulting Firm McKenzie and advocacy group lean in Amy pey joins me now she's the associate Managing editor for CBS money watch Amy What are the most startling findings in This report in your professional Opinion yeah I want to point out that This is the 10th year that lenan has Published the woman in the workplace Report so they have a decade to look Back at what's changed and what hasn't Changed and there are some troubling Findings I mean overall not much has Changed for women in Corporate America The report found that it'll take women 50 years to gain parity with men for Instance and one of the big issues they Found is that young women still aren't Getting the same promotionals that young Men are getting and that hasn't improved Over the years it's the so-called broken Rung it's that first promotion that men Are more likely to get than women and it Kind of explains why there are fewer Women at the top than men and as you Point out the sexual harassment findings
Are very troubling especially given that We had the me too movement and they Found that the rate of sexual harassment Hasn't changed in five years it hasn't Improved and that is extremely troubling Given that there has been a push to kind Of clean up and and improve the Situation in the workplace place I think That there's sort of the perception of How the workplace operates and then There's the reality so how do we resolve The reality um especially at a time when Frankly a lot of companies are rolling Back diversity equity and inclusion Programs yeah you know I talked with the Um experts at McKenzie and lean in about This because we've seen this from a lot Of corporations that they're pushing Back on Dei initiatives and and they Said in their words it's a real shift in The zeist um and one way that they saw This was for instance only four in 10 Young men uh men under 30 currently Support diversity efforts that's down From about half of young men five years Ago meanwhile young women support this At the same level that they did five Years ago so so so women are supporting This young men they're seeing a change In that um and you know I think that Some of the troubling behaviors aside From sexual harassment um also haven't Changed and so it's tackling a lot of Different behaviors and bias es for
Instance women told uh the survey that They're just as likely to have their Confidence questioned as they were in 2019 and this are things like you're in The office and someone if you're a woman They they uh they mistake you for Someone at a much lower level than you Actually are so that's basically uh Questioning your competence thinking That you're not at the at the high level That you actually are so there are Things like that as well that are um Problematic and are headwinds for women Gaining that parody in the workplace not Just a a this is not just a female Problem this is an everybody problem Amy Py thank you so much thank you so much
