[Music] Americans say they're optimistic about Jobs In their area as the economy reopens in The u.s that's according to new data From cbs news Ahead of the cbsn special employment in America airing tonight cbs news polled Americans on their jobs now and career Prospects in the future Americans appear to be especially Optimistic that businesses in their area Can reopen safely The pandemic has prompted some to think About the possibility of major life Changes if given the opportunity About four in 10 americans say they Would consider changing their jobs while A third of those who responded said They would consider changing careers cbs News elections and surveys director Anthony salvanto Is with us now to help break down this Data anthony my friend so good to see You we were just saying how much we miss You Great to have you back um so we know the Nature of work has also changed for many As they work remotely will it stay Changed forever or do people want to get Back Hey there vlad good to see you too and Look speaking of Remote work right a lot of us have been
Working from home Well we asked americans who are working From home if they'd like to keep doing That Or go back to some kind of a hybrid mix Or go back fully And what you find is that yeah there's Four in 10 who want to go back to their Workplace But if you sum up the number who would Continue to work Remotely entirely that's another third And then another quarter Who would like to do some kind of a Hybrid look at least as far as what People Want you've got this majority that would Consider Doing the same thing they've been doing At least in part At least you know going into the work Sometimes maybe a couple of days a week And then working from home the rest of The time so there might be that sort of Lasting shift At least in terms of what employees want Flat We just reported on a story about Employees working at a hospital that Don't want to be vaccinated and they Sued their employer Currently they lost but they're Appealing i'm wondering how employees Feel
About their employer mandating They be vaccinated hey there emery well We've got a slight majority who say that They think Employers should be allowed to Require a vaccine for their employees And You know we'll talk about what they Expect also from places that they go out And they patronize businesses etc And a lot of people feel like they'd Like to see employers Mandate vaccines for people in the Hospitality industry People that handle large crowds but then In terms of their specific employer At least in general we've got that 56 Percent That say they'd like to see it now one Of the things emory is this all goes Back to whether or not people feel Safe and comfortable and we did get a Large increase in the number of people Who overall Say that they'd feel safe going back to A workplace somewhat separate from Whether they Want to or want to keep working remotely But that's 72 Which is really up from from the spring And then i point you to That's about the same number who says They'd be comfortable now gathering with Friends
And while there's been an increase in The number who would get on an airplane Go to a large event from the spring It's still lower than all of those Things so what you're seeing in general Here emory is this americans re-emerging Going out but with that note of caution They've got some conditions on it They're not all going back all at once But they are Definitely starting you know as you've Probably seen if anybody's been out and About more More lately there's definitely an uptick In the number of people Returning and going out again anne marie I find these numbers fascinating anthony And emory because Uh it it literally mimics how i feel Like going to a workplace no problem Gathering with friends done that already Getting on an airplane You know i was a little concerned but we Did it a couple of weeks ago it was fine Going to a large event uh gonna go see Guns n roses At giant stadium this august that's Outdoors Foo fighters playing at madison square Garden that's indoors i was like I don't know about that so that's kind Of interesting anthony that the number Is just anecdotally uh match What you and the research team uh have
Discovered Yeah i i you know look i mean that note Of caution and by the way Vlad i i'm there you know i get that i It would take a lot you know there was a Chance for me to go to a foo fighters Concert i would Now definitely do it but yeah i mean People are Exercising a little bit of caution you Know what you're seeing here Is some of these things where they study Whether the employees are vaccinated Whether their fellow americans are going To be vaccinated one of the interesting Things out of this Out of this survey is that people who Were not vaccinated and there's still About one in five who are saying they Will not get the shot They are just as if not more comfortable They tell us Going out to large events going out to These places so the folks who are Vaccinated who are also somewhat Comfortable They also know that there's a lot of Moving parts to this there's a lot of People out there Who may not be vaccinated the same way That they are And that is of course driving some of Those some of those Caveats as well
Yeah i think that's true and you know i Should point out that though you've been Going Back into the office flat for a while It's you are only among a handful of People that have been it's not back to The way it was before Where we had you know three people to a Desk it was a pretty crowded Newsroom uh prior to that and i think Yeah there's a comfort level in kind of Sort of knowing your co-workers knowing Your friends And having a sense of where they stand On vaccinations versus you know sort of Random people like you were talking About earlier vlad this guy at the gym I don't know how he wears his shorts That may be an indication that he's uh He's not a vaccination type because you Have nothing else to go on right Exactly um so this next this next Question has to do with people who Say they're willing to move to another State a quarter of americans also said That they would move to another town Or another state if the opportunity Arose is that Connected a little bit to remote work i Don't know Yeah yeah it is um and what you're Seeing here is It's also connected to some of that Optimism that you all mentioned at the
Top of the segment so you see people are Optimistic that businesses can reopen Safely They're optimistic about the job market In general and then you see people Saying they're willing where the Opportunity to arise To also move and maybe not surprisingly Those numbers are higher For people who right older folks not as Willing to But that's driven by by younger people And Look we're seeing this in other data too As americans we See the the housing market and what's Happening there that's You know really doing very well and also You see a lot of mobility you're going To see that Even in the next census as those numbers Start to come out people Are moving a lot more and so we're Finding what really translates to i know It's not a majority But that would translate into millions Of people who were willing to move Also uh said that you know people found That people Say they'd be willing to change their Changes change their careers And that too was part and parcel of Maybe they've just something in this Remote work that maybe they have more
Flexibility and i would add too of Course Financial considerations that's the Number one reason that people give If they're considering a move a lot of Them to be closer to family and friends Right a lot of people Missing people because they can't Connect as much or couldn't connect As much over the last year though i Would add vladimir There was also a sizeable number that Said they might move to be further From their families so That's really i don't know Many of us have been in very close Quarters for a very long time so you can Understand why you might need a little Breathing room um You should just i mean you could be for All you know for all we know you could Be in costa rica you should be Broadcast i mean you you know what i Mean like when we they're people who are Working from home This is the time to do that right if You're not required to be in the office Um And you have all the technology at your Disposal and you of course have the Means not everybody has the means but You should Take advantage of the ability to work From home from a place that you've
Always wanted to To try and work from um and and when You're required to get back you get back But Uh but but i i that's a new one getting Away from If anything this pandemic has shown me Is that you Really like when it comes to spouses or Significant others You really really really gotta love him Because you were under lock and key For a very very long time 24 7 And uh that mattered i don't think There's no way to run When you're under you know covet Restrictions you can't go to the pub Yeah we should be checking in with Divorce lawyers right about now to see How robust businesses Um anthony uh we great We love checking in with you with these Numbers and partially it has to do with A little bit of what vlad said that We know you know that we know how we Feel in our little bubble and it's Really interesting to see You know a snapshot of how everyone else Feels and how we fit into that so thank You so much For joining us this morning thanks
